ARMAND JEAN DU PLESSIS
CARDINAL - DUKE OF RICHELIEU AND OF FRONSAC
Armand Jean de Plessis was a French nobleman, statesman and clergyman. The Cardinal de Richelieu was often known by the title of the King's "Chief Minister" or "First Minister." He founded the Académie Française, the learned society responsible for matters pertaining to the French language. It is probable that this is what Safford was referring to when he told Father Palomo that he [Palomo] was his [Safford's] "Richelieu."
