FONTE RIVER VALLEY
The Fonte River Valley is located in central Guam and includes parts of Asan-Maina and Agana Heights. It is the site of a local legend, the White Lady of Fonte. http://ns.gov.gu/legends/whitelady.html It is also the site of the Fonte River which was the primary source of water for Agaña [Hagåtña] pre WWII. During Safford's time, there was no water system on island. The population obtained water from springs, rivers, or hand-dug wells. Some families constructed cisterns to collect rainwater. In 1910, the Unites States under President William H. Taft built the Fonte Dam, a significant public works project. Water was piped to a reservoir constructed above Agaña. Water for this reservoir was then piped throughout the village of Agaña [Hagåtña].
