CAPTAIN BOWMAN HENDRY MCCALLA
Captain McCalla was career military man rising to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1903. In October 1899, commanding the USS Newark, Captain McCalla was on his way to the Philippines where he took part in an operation to run gunboats up the Luzon River during the Philippine Insurrection. In March 1900 still in command of the USS Newark, Captain McCalla participated in the China Relief Expedition during the Boxer Rebellion and was cited for conspicuous gallantry in battle. McCalla was recognized for his service when two ships were named the USS McCalla. In addition, McCalla Field and McCalla Hill at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base were also named after him.
